In May 2021, Darryl and I celebrated our 10-year anniversary in London. Staying at The Hoxton Hotel in Shoreditch, we were excited to pay a visit to the newly opened Maya, a Mexican rooftop restaurant and bar by The Hoxton and Soho House.
The restaurant stretches across a large indoor seating area, lined with windows that let in plenty of that hazy London light, before leading out to an open terrace with views that span over the city below.
The decor inside the restaurant is absolutely stunning. Picture terracotta pots, an array of tassled cushions, towering banana plants, palms that dance in the breeze, mustard yellow sofas, solid wood furniture, orange tiled flooring and delicate woven lampshades. In here, it’s almost easy to forget you’re sky-high in England’s capital city.
We both ordered a tequila based drink, and I’ll say without hesitation that my spicy margarita, made from scratch with fresh ingredients at the bar just behind me, was the best beverage I have ever tasted. Sweetened with apple but holding the spice of the jalapenos, it was divine.
Having recently devoured breakfast in Shoreditch, we opted for a light lunch, sharing the tangy chicken tinga tacos and the delightfully light cod tacos. The food exploded with so many flavours, and tasted very authentic in comparison to the tacos we had enjoyed in Mexico a few years ago.
For dessert, we tucked into a rich, gooey chocolate cake, complemented by a colourful passion fruit sorbet, which slipped down a treat with our side of margaritas.
